What do you call the man who sews?
We need a name. Tailor is a bit of a stretch. While historically a tailor was one who cuts the cloth in modern times it commands a bit of respect. Extensive tutelage, exacting precision, knowledge of fabrics, sizes, techniques. It's similar to the feeling I get when people try to refer to me (a programmer) as an engineer. As if I could tell them whether their bridge will stay up. I’m unworthy. I’d go with sewer but for its unfortunate heteronym. For now I guess it’s “seamster” which MSWord won’t even let me type without trying to correct it into "semester". As for “spy”… no way. You can’t hide when you’re the only male customer in the sewing store. If you have an opinion. Please take the poll . |
